Book Introduction
The field of male reproductive medicine is evolving at an incredible rate. The advent of intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) has added a revolutionary new dimension to the treatment of the infertile couple. Never before have patients had so many alternatives for conception to choose from. The opportunity for genetic paternity has been extended to almost any man regardless of his diagnosis. As technology advances, and the natural selection process is bypassed, we are obligated to do no harm to the couple or their future offspring and offer options with cost-effectiveness in mind. These exciting and powerful tools offers new hope and should be applied in a well-thought out manner. Male factor infertility is frequently the result of underlying pathology, which should be identified and corrected when possible
This issue of the Infertility and reproductive Medicine Clinics of North America is intended to provide a detailed overview of common problems encountered in the diagnosis and treatment of male factor infertility in the area of ICSI. Special attention is given to comparing the results of different therapeutic modalities for each condition. Hopefully this information will help guide couples through emotionally difficult infertility treatments. Each couple enters the process with a unique set of circumstances and perspectives based on medical, cultural, personal, and financial background. Custom tailored therapy may best help couples achieve their desired goals while working within their individual parameters.
I would like to thank the authors for contributing their time, thoughts and expertise to this issue. They are the leaders in their respective fields. Thank you to Carin Davis of W.B. Saunders Company and Drs. Alan DeCherney and Michael Diamond for affording me the opportunity to assemble this text. This book is dedicated to my family, Ina and Samuel Werthman, and mentors, Drs. Cappy Rothman, Larry Lipshultz, and Richard Ehrlich. Thier inspiration, encouragement, and dedication to teaching have enabled me to pursue the field I love. To my office staff, Diane Vieira, Corlyn Saldana, and Jim Norris, who perform their jobs with kindness and good humor. Lastly, this book is dedicated to my patients who have allowed me the privilege of touching their lives by helping them start families.
